About Goseikan Kendo Dojo

What is Goseikan Kendo Dojo?

Strength, truthfulness, and wisdom, through spirit, discipline, and loyalty.

Goseikan (pronounced go–say–kahn) is a Kendo Dojo founded in Illinois. The name Goseikan translates to “strength and right path dojo”, which is both critical to the development of one’s Kendo as well as one’s self. These virtues are reflected throughout our dojo, from the philosophy we uphold and the lessons we employ, to the practices we have and the effort that we give. Each member, from the newest to the most experienced, is critical in growing the dojo and their fellow kenshi.

Our Philosophy

Goseikan is rooted in the philosophy that the way of the sword extends beyond swinging a shinai, bokken, or katana. To begin, there is no one right reason for starting Kendo but we all come to practice with the same goals in mind – to achieve the best kendo and kiai (spirit) possible. No matter what brings you to the lifelong path of Kendo, Goseikan aims to ensure all students learn Kendo with strength, honor, and discipline. In this, the journey to discover Kendo can also be said as the journey to discover oneself and one’s spirit.

Following the Goseikan path in Kendo is a celebration of overcoming challenges and slowly gaining wisdom in understanding what those challenges represent both in Kendo and in our daily lives. These challenges will come in many forms but must be met with honesty and integrity. Goseikan teaches that there are no shortcuts in Kendo, but when one meets these challenges with truthfulness and strength they will overcome these challenges and grow as a person. Conquering these obstacles teaches us to overcome the obstacles in our lives both around us and within us.

Though the Kendo journey is a passage for the self, Goseikan emphasizes that it is one not traveled alone. Strengthening one’s Kendo and one’s mind is attained through practice in the dojo and with fellow kenshi (kendo students). As we practice kendo, we learn together as a group regardless of what level each individual is at and create connections with one another. These bonds continually impel us to improve both individually as a dojo while celebrating a collective growth and mutual respect that exists only in the dojo. Practicing together, challenging together, competing together all solidify our bonds of loyalty to one another.

Goseikan believes in the joy of growing together, the importance of following the right path, and the virtue of achieving victory over oneself. We take no practice for granted, and value every lesson no matter how difficult or challenging. We hope that you join us as we all follow the Kendo journey together.
